Linux does not comprise the entire world.  There are actually other 
OSes out there, and not all of them use vim.  Moreover, not everyone 
ships the same version of vim, or ships a version of vim with the 
same features -- which is actually what got us into this discussion 
in the first place.

That's actually the crux of the problem -- in this case, excessive 
flexibility can be bad, because it allows multiple different 
implementations to have radically different feature sets, and yet 
still call themselves by the same name.
