If you take 10 minutes to go through the Yast printer tool, you can save
yourself some money and heartache. It would take you less time than it
did to think about and type that email. You should have no problem with
that printer, provided you have the HPLIP package installed according to
this page.

I haven't had much trouble getting printers to work in Linux, but I buy
my hardware with compatibility in mind. I've never had to look too far.
I have an HP LaserJet 1160, Epson Stylus CX3810 Printer/Scanner, and the
newest one that is only a few months old, an HP Photosmart C5180
All-in-One. All work 100% in Linux and can be found for cheap.
If you can't buy a new printer and don't have the time to run Yast,
OpenOffice as well as many other apps in Linux have native PDF support
in that you'll have an option to save to PDF. You could take that PDF
anywhere you wanted to and get it printed. You could also setup a PDF
virtual printer in CUPS. If you're interested in that, Google it, but if
you are going to that you might as well try to get your real printer to
work first.
Cheers,
Daniel
