[SATLUG] linux multimedia tools

So many of these questions are easily answered, but there's a fair
amount of tool diversity and change, so I thought I'd poll for answers
I wasn't aware of yet.

1) For merging split multimedia files, I found mkvmerge. Any others?

2) For extracting audio samples from movie files, is that a good tool?

3) For capturing video from a VCR tape via a Hauppage PVR-250, I think
I can just cat the video device. How about sound? Is there a single
tool that will do it?

4) How do I edit the result to cut out blank space at the beginning,
adjust volume levels, etc?

5) Suppose I have a video file, and I want to mix a background sound
track onto it. Any ideas on how to do this?

These are all relatively easy questions made difficult by the
seemingly pointless diversity of container file formats.

6) Any way to view or convert .lit ebooks?

7) How about .uif? .daa?
