while nothing beats a good backup probably cfengine
(http://www.cfengine.org/), Puppet
(http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/AboutPuppet)
or bcfg2 (links anyone?)  would give you a good hand
at it.

it is not version control software, it is
configuration management, but you could keep the
configuration files under version control software.
