but overall i'm happy with it. i know that fedora,
slack, and  especially debian go months, if not 
years, in between upgrades. i've  never understood 
ubuntu's decision to crank out updates so rapidly.

do any of you know the philosophy why they crank out
so many?

I'd venture to say they want to offer the latest
bleeding edge applications for publicity and to 
remain high on the distro-watch listings.  And
with this wide spread popularity, gain adoption 
by commercial and government entities. 

Such as the French government's choice of Ubuntu 
over (local FR) Mandriva for their open source O/S 
in March this year.
