Yeah, I'm sure the O'Reilly book is good.
One thing you might consider is learning the editors chronologically;
that is, learning ed then ex then vi. I learned ed first for mud
coding. I use ed far more frequently than I thought I would; for
example, when doing troubleshooting if the TERM and number of lines
aren't right, vi can get all screwy, so I end up using ed. BTW, the
command sets build on each other.
Here's a useful command:
That finds every line containing the Regular Expression and
substitutes foo with bar on those lines only.
