Yes, you are running with a reduced colormap and the various
applications giving you problems are trying to help by using a
seperate, private colormap - so that they look normal when the focus
is on them.
Check your color depth settings. You want 24-bit color.
BTW, you can get nice 128MB nVidia AGP cards for $50 from Ebay (or
maybe the seller, imagestore.us).

Because you don't have enough video RAM to do 24-bit colors in these
resolutions, probably. Have you read the log file when you start up
X? It should be in /var/log/X or something like that.
