Tom,

I've got it on an external narrow connector.  It's the only SCSI
device in my system.

Co-incidentally, I think I may know the reason for the slowness.  It
seems that I'm having a heat issue.  I'm getting errors in the syslog
mentioning an overheating of the processor, and that it's throttling
down the process to let it cool off.  Seems to happen when I hit the
drive real hard like when I load up my inbox with 15000+ mail messages
and pine or horde/imp starts hitting it hard.  Going to get a better
cpu fan on payday and see if that will cure the problem.
