Yep.  Simply choose upgrade and it will update packages and remove
discontinued/deprecated packages.  
-- My wife's PC has gone from 8.x > 9.0 > 9.1 
-- My laptop went from 9.2 > 9.3 with no data/config issues.
-- I have done a number of version upgrades and have never had a
problem.  Any 3rd party apps that have kernel modules (VPN
clients/VMWare/Special hardware/etc) will have to recompile/replace
those modules.
  It is a really painless process.
