[SATLUG] RH 9 odds & ends

I have a few problems I have not been able to figure out.

 

How do I see the instantaneous modem connection speed?

 

How do I get the num lock set to on during start up? Bios says it is 
but RH9 doesn't notice.

 

If logged in as root and the screen goes blank, pressing enter or moving 
the mouse does not wake up the machine. (I know I should not be logged in as 
root let alone leave it that way.) The screen saver does not work during root 
for security reasons as it would be a program taking over a root session but the 
screen does go blank. I think power management is shutting down the screen but 
root security rules are refusing to allow a wake up. Has anyone seen this 
before?
