[SATLUG] Re: Pc Sync

I've seen a number of people give great suggestions on this like CVS, and
RSync. But I see a couple of problems here that Patrick need to think
about.

Whether you are using Linux or Winblows, there is a way to sync a 'file'
directory. RSync works good in Linux, but I don't think it will easily
handle a situation where the file exists on both computers -- just one newer
than the other. I know the Winblows "briefcase" handles that situation by
comparing the file save/last edited date. The newer one wins out and the
older file is overwritten by the new one. But does anyone know of something
in Linux that will do the same???

And the thing that Patrick need to think about is file sync'ing versus
record sync'ing. If you update a word processing document, you would want
it to update the file on the other system with the newer version -- that's
fine. But if you do that with e-mail, you're asking for problems.

What happens when you receive e-mail on your desktop at 08:00, more mail on
your laptop at a customer location at 10:00, and then sync them after lunch
at 1:00. The 'file' with the latest edit date/time (laptop) will overwrite
the desktop 'file' and all your morning e-mails are gone. What you need in
e-mail is 'record' sync'ing. And I don't know of ANYTHING that does that
with e-mail. There are database programs that do it -- they aren't cheap or
easy. But nothing for e-mail as far as I know. Anyone else???

Chuck

Maybe there's something I don't understand, but wouldn't the easiest
solution be to have a laptop with a docking station at work?
