[SATLUG] Printing on home network

Generally you would use a print server and assign the printer an URL
in your local network. The printer or print server memory would be
the limit on your buffer. You would need some sort of DHCP server
running.
At present I network 3 printers but hand each one off of a computer.
This uses computer headspace but is less costly than a print server
which run $125-$250 each. There is a linksys type router (another
brand)
which I have seen at ALTEC which itself included a print server as
well as
WAN and 4 slots and a DHCP server inside, but I have not tried THAT
one
out. You could also configure a linix server as a print server and
attach
more than one server to it, establish print buffer and all. You could
even add a card with LPT2 and LPT3 et al aboard. Or more even.
Again there is hardware expense and configuration time...
you could establish some large printer buffers on disk via this
method.
Generally the printers are hung on individual computers and "shared
out".
This is a cost effective method unless you are supporting a larger
group with few printer.
