Not sure where you getting the information of bringing your network down to 
dialup speeds, but I'm using iptables with kernel 2.4.20-pre1 on a Sun Sparc 20 
loaded with SuSE 7.3 and do port forwarding with no problems at all over my 
cablemodem.
