No, it's not a sick joke but a draconian bill being pushed by the likes of
Disney(tm) and News Corp in congress.  I think Walt would turn over in his
grave if he heard about it.

Actually the whole thing is ridiculous, it would make something a simple as
a 3 line 'hello world' script illegal to distribute without the special
government issue copyright encryption.

I think that part of the problem lies in the way most average people view
computers.  They don't see any reason to 'get under the hood' and find out
how their computer works, or to program their own code.  Therefore,
legislation like this doesn't bother them much.  They just want their
computer to work and to do what they want it to do.  For example, the
average joe might like to play music, watch DVDs, send and receive email,
etc.  They don't care to know about file permissions, bios settings, or copy
protection for that matter.

When something goes wrong with their computer or they have a question,
that's when they call YOU - the computer guy who knows everything :).
